The General Secretary of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Samuel Gyau Obuobi, delivered a profound teaching titled “The Two Laws” during a recent service at PIWC Tesano, shedding light on the liberating truths found in Romans 8:1–2.
Citing the Apostle Paul’s words — “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, for the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death” — Apostle Obuobi explained that two significant things happen to every believer who comes into Christ: they are no longer under condemnation, and they are set free from the law of sin and death.
No Condemnation in Christ
Expounding on the first truth, he stated that “no condemnation” signifies a complete acquittal from the guilt and penalty of sin — a recurring theme throughout the New Testament.
He noted that the word “now” emphasizes a decisive moment of transformation: “Yes, we were once under condemnation outside of Christ, but now, in Christ Jesus, there is no condemnation,” he said.
Apostle Obuobi emphasized that this new reality is a powerful declaration of the believer’s justified status before God. In Christ, guilt is replaced with grace, and judgment gives way to freedom.
The Law of the Spirit of Life
The second truth, he explained, is that “the law of the Spirit of life has set believers free from the law of sin and death.”
He described the “law of sin and death” as a spiritual principle at work in the fallen human nature — one that inclines man toward sin and ultimately leads to death. Quoting Romans 7:21–23, he illustrated Paul’s inner struggle: “When I want to do good, evil lies close at hand.”
“The natural man — the one still in Adam — is naturally inclined to sin because of this law within him,” he said. “It wages war against the mind, making him a prisoner of sin.”
However, Apostle Obuobi pointed out that the “law of the Spirit of life” is a superior, higher law — the power of the Holy Spirit who gives life and empowers the believer to live righteously. Drawing an analogy, he likened it to how the law of aerodynamics can overcome the law of gravity: “Though we are naturally bound by sin, the Spirit’s law enables us to soar above it.”
The Repeal of the Old Law
Referencing Romans 6:10 — “When He died, He died once to break the power of sin” — Apostle Obuobi declared that Jesus Christ effectively repealed the old law of sin and death at the cross.
He explained that to “repeal a law” means to annul or abolish a previous statute by enacting a new one. Using Ghana’s repeal of the Criminal Libel Law as an example, he illustrated how Christ abolished the law of sin and death by establishing a new spiritual law — the law of the Spirit of life.
“On the cross, Jesus repealed the law of sin and death and replaced it with the law of the Spirit of life,” he affirmed. “This new law, powered by the Holy Spirit, gives believers the strength to live above sin and reflect the character of Christ.”
Empowered by the Spirit
Concluding his message, Apostle Obuobi highlighted that this new law operates through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. It is not written on tablets of stone but on the hearts of believers.
“The Spirit of life gives us the power to live a Christ-like life,” he emphasized. “In Christ, we are no longer bound by sin’s gravity; we are lifted by the power of the Spirit.”
The sermon left congregants deeply inspired to embrace their freedom in Christ and to walk daily under the guidance and empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
